Natural brick siding is one of the oldest methods of exterior siding. Most people who chose brick do so for its appearance, but it is hard to ignore the benefits of it, too.

Brick is a fantastic insulator. In fact, it’s one of the best insulators available as a siding material.

It is hardy, too. Brick is resistant to termites, fade and most molds. Extremely cold temperatures and heavy moisture seem to be the only weather issue – older brick may experience damage in these situations. Newer brick manufacturers are addressing this concern and winning the battle.

If there is any maintenance with brick, it is a general rinsing with a garden hose every few years. Occasional cracking may occur in the mortar and should be sealed off if this happens. It is wise to hire a mason to install, or “lay”, brick. The installation is critical to a good finish.

Natural stone is also an option for exterior sidings; however it is extremely heavy and very expensive. Like brick, it will last the lifetime of the structure. Also like brick, it should only be attempted by an experienced mason.

Both brick and stone are available in faux finishes. They are man made imitations that look and feel like the originals only they are less expensive and much lighter. Some can even be installed by the do-it-yourselfer.

Faux brick and stone is less expensive than the real thing, but more expensive than most other sidings. It will last the life of the building.
